Story: Donkey Kong, Diddy, Dixie Kong, and even Cranky are just chilling (get it?) in DK's house, about to eat some delicious birthday cake. A mean old group known as the Snow-Mads feel so inclined as to ruin DK's birthday and take over his island. The Viking-like Walrus pirate king blows his evil dragon horn right into the heart of DK island, which also causes all of the Kongs to be blasted off and marooned in a faraway island known as Mangrove Cove. It is up to our heroes, the Kongs to blast, jump, climb, and leap their way from island to island, defeating the wicked Snow-Mads cronies, and take back their home. The story in this game is simplistic, but it does a great job introducing you to the superb platforming that makes this game so good. This is capped off by a stellar presentation, which leads me into my next point.
Presentation: This game looks beautiful. This might be the best looking side-scrolling platformer that I have ever seen in my life. It puts the new Super Mario Bros games to shame, and even rivals the also spectacular Rayman Legends (another wonderful Wii U platformer.) Everything about this game, from DK's fur, the lush, green background foliage, to the water, and even the snow and ice levels (some of the most awe inspiring looking levels in any platformer I might add) simply pop. The textures are smooth, and the whole game just looks as good as I think it possibly could have. Moreover, the HD in this game really brings DK and crew to life like never before. You can actually see the fur on DK, and even Cranky's wrinkles.
The sound design in this game steals the show where presentation is concerned. The original DKC composer, David Wise, returns to score this new game. All I can say is, the maestro is back, and he delivers a stunning, catchy, fun, and at times, downright epic musical score. Kenji Yamamoto did a valiant job in scoring Donkey Kong Country Returns, though that game mainly featured updated versions of older tracks. Tropical Freeze boasts some amazing and wonderful new musical tracks that will capture your heart the way they did when you first heard aquatic ambience, Lockjaws Locker, or Sticker-brush symphony (all of which appear in this game brilliantly updated and reinterpreted.) Some of the best new tracks are windmill hills, grassland groove, and, especially, the Snow-Mads theme. The music really adds a sense of epicness to the game, especially as you get near the end. The feelings and emotions you get from hearing the music really make the whole game feel alive, and will even bring a tear to your eye in some occasions. What makes the soundtrack so good in this game is not just the music itself, but how it serves the gameplay. Depending on the situation, the music will change ever so slightly. When DK and co. are jumping, climbing, and swinging around the platform levels, the music will be harder hitting, and more fast-paced and frantic. This is brilliantly contrasted with the way the music changes when you drive underwater to swim, where the music is softer and more ambient. The music in this game is absolutely superb, and you will want to listen to it even after you've finished the game, it is an absolutely wonderful and beautiful score.
The only downside to the presentation is the loading times. Whenever I boot up the game, I find myself having to wait almost a whole minute sometimes for the game to load. This can be annoying, especially when I just want to get into the game. The loading times are also lengthy when you start a level, sometimes as long as half a minute. This can occasionally bog down the experience. It isn't a huge deal, but it does cause slight frustrations at times. All in all, this game has a stellar presentation with beautiful graphics, an amazing soundtrack, and slick menus.
Controls and Gameplay: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze features a control scheme that is so slick, smooth, and tight that you could bounce a dime off of it and get loose change. Unlike the last game, which featured the occasionally frustrating waggle control with the Wii-remote, this game goes for a traditional control set up(though you still have the option to play with the Wii-remote and motion controls if you so desire.) I'm so happy that Nintendo and Retro allowed us control options this time around, so that everyone can play in their ideal mode. Controlling Donkey Kong has never been smoother. You use the analog stick to move the great ape left and right, A to jump, and A again to glide, or use Cranky's walking stick like a poco stick (awesome!) You can make DK move faster by holding down the R button, grab ropes, or vines with the ZL/ZR buttons, and make DK roll by moving the control stick left or right and pressing the Y button. DK can either jump on top of enemies to kill them, or roll into them. Occasionally, Rambo the Rhino will make an appearance. Controlling him is very straightforward, as you simply move the control stick left or right, A to jump, and use the Y button to get the noble Rhino to move even faster. The control in this game is flawless, you die a lot in the game, but you never feel like it was the game's fault.
The Gameplay itself is Outstanding. The level design is arguably the best I have ever seen in a side-scrolling platformer, taking inspiration from the Donkey Kong Country games before it, but improving and expanding on them in nearly every way. There is more variety in the game's level design than Cranky Kong can shake his walking stick at. You have everything from lush, jungle forests, to autumn inspired hills, grand planes with backgrounds that add a sense of enormous scale, sea levels, underwater levels, dessert Jello, and fruit themed levels (Yumm!), and even ice and snow stages. While Donkey Kong Country Returns had great level design, some of the ideas ran their course (coughrocketlevels.) This is not the case with Tropical Freeze. Every idea feels like it gets its time in the sun (sometimes literally) without staying longer than is necessary. The mine cart levels, and rocket levels return, but are done more sparingly, and more creatively than they were in the last game. The level design always keeps you on your toes.
This game includes the ability to play in single player, or multiplayer modes. In Single player mode, DK has three buddies that he can use to assist him in some capacity throughout the course of the game. Diddy Kong is back, and brings along with him his rocket jet-pack, and his peanut gun. Dixie Kong makes an awesome, and triumphant return, and she can glide and stay in the air longer than the other characters (which is great for levels with tall inclines, or with lots of platforms.) The Kong who steals the game for me, though, is Cranky Kong. Cranky, DK's condescending uncle is, for the first time in the Kong's history, playable in a DKC game. He does not disappoint. Cranky has the ability to use his walking stick as though it were a poco-stick. Cranky and DK can bounce up and down on the tick, stomp on enemies, and even avoid taking damage from certain, spiked floors. It is awesome. speaking of enemies, they come in different shapes in sizes. Every island features enemies unique to that island. Autumn heights features owls, eggs, and the like, whereas grassland groove features more colorful foul. The sea stages force you to avoid getting eaten by sharks, and, the snow and ice levels make you bounce, or roll through fierce intimidating walrus creatures. The enemy variety in each island helps to make this game feel incredibly organic.
This games bosses are incredible. each one is of a massive scale, has its own unique moves and feel, and also features an intense soundtrack to make the fights even more epic. The boss fights in this game are by no means easy, though each one feels incredibly satisfying to defeat. You fight everything from a mad sea-otter, to giant owl, to three baboon triplets, to a crazy fish, to a popsicle loving polar bear, to the Snow-Mad king himself. Delivering the final coup de-grace to the final boss is probably one of the most satisfying things I've felt in a video game. The boss fights are multi-layered, more dynamic than ever, and keep you on your toes from start to finish. Each boss in the game is awe-inspiring and unforgettable.
Speaking of start to finish, one thing this game is not is easy. It does not hold your hand much. Unlike many games of the last ten years, you will get your Donkey A$$ kicked from here to the dark side of DK Isle. The stages require precise timing, concentration, and coordination. Because the control is so good, you never feel like you can blame any one else but yourself for your own folly (or fall-y, ha ha, since you will fall a lot.) this game is so difficult at times, particularly during some of the later levels, and incredibly intense boss battles, that you will go bananas (another one, I'll keep-em coming!) However one of the upsides to this is that you can actually learn from your mistakes. When you make an imprecise jump, or don't time your jump onto a boss's head in the right time, you can wonder why. This encourages you to learn from your miss-steps and improve with every try until you're victorious in conquering the level.
The game does have ways to make the game more manageable. The Super Kong from Donkey Kong Country returns is no longer here, but this game make sup for it by letting you by helpful and (actually very useful) items form Cranky's shop. These items include extra Kong barrels (if you loose your Kong) along with extra hearts (Your life point in this game) to temporarily invincibility-potions, to extra wheels for mine carts or rockets, and more. These items make the game far more manageable, but it will cost you a fair number of coins in the game to purchase them. It helps to think strategically with every level that you start playing, in order to figure out the best means of beating it.
This game is mostly a single-player experience, but the game also allows you to play in multi-player. Player one will always be Donkey Kong, while player two can choose from Diddy, Dixie, or Cranky when you boot up the game. Two player's can make the gameplay more frantic and confusing at times, which might make it difficult to get through a level unless you really cooperate with one-another. If the player is less experienced, they can ride on DK's shoulder's and assist him by helping him glide, or jump via poco-stick. Player two can also shoot peanut guns and what-not to stun enemies (if they play as Diddy.) Me and my dad have recently started up a new play-through, and he has enjoyed the game by assisting me from afar with Diddy and cranky mainly, and he seems to enjoy it even though he's not a gamer.
At the end of the day, the gameplay in Tropical Freeze is so darn pitch-perfect for a side-scrolling platformer that you can slice a banana cream pie on it and get smooth slices (again with banana jokes!)
Replayability: Apart from just going through the levels, and beating the game, this game also urges you to play it again and again. This is one of the few platformers in recent times where the levels themselves are so much fun to play again and again without even finding the extra things. This game does not get boring, like, ever! Each stage has hidden puzzle pieces that you can find in order to unlock new pictures or music for the game's photo gallery (you can purchase squawks from Funky Kong's store if you want an easier time finding them.) Furthermore, the levels also include the usual KONG letters. When you collect every KONG letter in every stage in one of the islands, a bonus, Super, Super hard stage will be unlocked. Getting through these will continue to occupy and add to the game's longevity (if you continue to desire getting your butt kicked even more, that is.) The boss fights are also fun to go back and replay. Time attack mode also returns from the previous game. This game has more than sufficient reason for you to revisit it after your initial play-through.
Verdict: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is, arguably, the greatest side-scrolling platformer of the past ten years. While it's easy to overlook it, do to the saturation of other, far less original and unique platformers (such as the new super Mario bros games) this game really does stand apart from all of the others. This is a beautiful game that was made with the upmost love and care for its source material, made by the fans, for the fans. This is a game that pays homage, respects, and honor's its predecessors, but surpasses them in nearly every way. The graphics are the best I have seen in a game like this, the gameplay and controls are top notch, and the wonderful sound-track will bring you more joy than you can imagine. While this game is not for the faint of heart, and the occasional loading times bothersome, the whole game itself just makes up for whatever nit-picks or short-comings one can find in it, tooth and nail. Think of this game as being in the same vein as how Star Wars: The Force Awakens was to the original Star Wars Trilogy, or, a better comparison, what Diddy's Kong Quest was to the first Donkey Kong Country game. This game respects, but improves on nearly every aspect of the game that came before it. It's fitting that I am writing this review on Christmas day, as this is a game that holds many nostalgic memories for me, in a way the Christmas's of old could do. For that reason, this game is, hands down, a Wii U must have. This is the best single player platform exclusive game on the Wii U. So get, play it, and experience a game so cool, it will even make Donkey Kong's hair flow in the chilly breeze. And remember,
"He's bigger, faster, and stronger too. He's the first member of the DK crew!"
Cons:
Lengthy Loading times
Not for the faint of heart
Multi-player hectic when separated
Pros:
Awesome Graphics
Beautiful Music
Amazing Atmosphere for a side-scrolling platform game
Incredible level variety
Refined, slick, and smooth gameplay
Tight Controls
Amazing, awe-inspiring boss fights
Ability to play as multiple Kongs with different strengths and weaknesses
Arguably the best DKC game yet
Verdict: 10/10
God Bless, and have a very Merry Christmas
The graphics in this game are really gorgeous. It is one of those games where the graphical detail in the both the foreground and background is so good that it gives the game a really high quality feel. It is very colorful.
The gameplay is mostly really good. It is very challenging compared to other Nintendo platformers, but is still a blast to play. It definitely exhibits Nintendo's signature touch and charm.
There are a couple things with the controls that you have to get used (i.e. in order to pick up a barrel you have to let go of the run button and press it again, unlike Super Mario games where you can just keep holding the run button and you will pick up a shell as you run). The interface is a little clunky (i.e. you have to select whether you are playing coop or single, TV or gamepad screen at the beginning of your play session rather than being able to switch back and forth at any time like most other Wii U games) and the load screens can be a little long. None of these are big enough issues to dock a star though. At the reduced price of $20 this game is a steal.
You can also play as Diddy, Dixie, or Grandpa Kong (Cranky?) and the two player mode is co-op. I haven't played the one player, so I am not sure how that works with the special characters. Diddy has his peanut guns which enable him to hover in the air briefly. Dixie's ponytail enables her to not only hover/float, but gives her a little extra boost upwards to help with getting items that are almost out of reach. Cranky has a cane which works very similarly to Scrooge McDuck's (if you're familiar with that game), where you can use it as a pogo stick of sorts to get some serious height and bounce through thorns.
Overall, this was a really fun game, and if you were disappointed by Donkey Kong Returns, you should really give this one a shot because it seriously improves over that one.
